OFFICIAL: Springbok Playmaker Signs with Japanese Club

Springbok and Stormers standout Manie Libbok has officially been unveiled as the latest signing for Japanese side Hanazono Liners in Osaka.

While speculation about Libbok’s overseas move had been widespread, the news is now confirmed: he will be heading to Japan on a permanent contract, filling the void left by Wallabies veteran Quade Cooper, who departed the club at the end of the recent season.

The Stormers have agreed to release Libbok early from his current deal, which was originally set to run through 2027.

Stormers Coach Acknowledges Libbok’s Departure

Speaking about the move, Stormers head coach John Dobson admitted that several factors influenced the decision, including the rise of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu as the preferred flyhalf.

“Manie is a huge loss,” Dobson said. “We’ve had an incredible journey with him and would’ve loved to retain him. But there are two main considerations. Sacha is very determined to play at flyhalf, and he’s earned that right.

“Sacha doesn’t want to be a bench option covering fullback—it created a difficult situation. At the same time, Manie received a life-changing offer from Japan.

“We could’ve insisted he honor his contract, but we weren’t going to force him to turn down that kind of money or accept that he may no longer be our first-choice flyhalf.

“Manie leaves with our full blessing, appreciation, and an open door for a return. We had a great conversation about it. When he decides to come back, it will be here.”
