The Vikings at CHI Need to Put Pressure on Another Young QB
I believed that winning two of three games at Jacksonville, Tennessee, and Chicago would be a decent way for the Vikings to start their current three-game road trip and improve their season record to 8-3. Although all three teams are losing, a victory in Chicago to go 9-2 would be a fantastic achievement now that they had won the first two games. In the NFL, winning on the road is never difficult.
At Soldier Field, the Vikings have had both success and loss. I vividly recall my second season in 1977, when our Vikings were coming off a Super Bowl season, and Hall of Famer Walter Payton established an NFL record with 275 rushing yards in a 10-7 Bears victory. In 1984, I witnessed Archie Manning get sacked eleven times by the Bears’ outstanding defence, which was headed by Hall of Famers Mike Singletary and Dan Hampton.
Vikings Need to Put Pressure At CHI, another young quarterback I also have good memories of Chicago, like the 1992 game when we won 38-10 and won the division after Jack Del Rio intercepted a ball from Jim Harbaugh and returned it 84 yards for a Pick-6.
Going into Sunday’s game, the Bears are a desperate squad. They’ve lost four straight games, including last week when the Packers stopped Cairo Santos’ 46-yard field goal try to finish the game and on Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary in Washington. Chicago’s next game is a Thanksgiving Day trip to Detroit to play the hot Lions. They are now 4-6. When the Bears began the season with a 4-2 record, there were dreams of making the playoffs; however, both their season and Coach Matt Eberflus’ future are in jeopardy.
Caleb Williams, a rookie quarterback selected with the first overall choice, has had a mainly dismal season (he ranks 28th in passer rating), partly because of his poor protection and tendency to hold the ball for extended periods of time. This is another favourable matchup for Brian Flores and his defence. Because of the Bears’ strong defence, the Vikings can win if they dominate and force turnovers. Sam Darnold and the offence, meanwhile, do just enough to win while protecting the ball. The wind and cold make it difficult to kick in Chicago in the latter half of the season.
