203 yards are carried by Jovantae Barnes as Oklahoma speeds past Maine.
Jovantae Barnes helped lead Oklahoma to a 59-14 victory over Maine on Saturday in Norman, Oklahoma, with a career-high 203 yards and three touchdowns on 18 runs. The Sooners (5-4) ended a three-game losing run with the victory. The Sooners had the game firmly in hand when Jackson Arnold left the game late in the third quarter after throwing for 224 yards and two touchdowns. With 381 running yards, Oklahoma’s total output of 665 was over 300 yards more than they had in any other game this season. The Sooners’ offensive output was the highest since the latter part of the 2022 campaign. Only 251 yards, 107 on the ground, were accumulated by FCS program Maine (4-5). The Sooners had amassed 402 yards at halftime, the most they had ever gained in a whole game.
Maine punted on seven of its next eight complete drives and didn’t have another drive of more than 24 yards until the fourth quarter. Taylor Tatum’s 1-yard field goal early in the second quarter gave the Sooners the lead. OU dominated the game with 28 points in the second quarter, including a 90-yard reception from Arnold by J.J. Hester. Hester finished with 112 yards from four receptions. Barnes then scored on a 19-yard run early in the third quarter and added an 8-yard touchdown run shortly before intermission. Eric Gray was the last Oklahoma rusher to reach 200 yards in 2022. Peevy went 13 of 24 for the Black Bears with 123 yards and a touchdown, giving Joe more than half of that total.
