Newcastle’s “flop” turned down a chance to play at St. James’ Park again this summer and is now a target for Man City.
Before the new season begins, Manchester City’s backroom staff will undergo major changes, much as what happened to Newcastle United this summer.
Paul Mitchell was eventually named as Newcastle’s new sporting director after Dan Ashworth left for Old Trafford.
Mitchell had previously enjoyed success at Southampton and Tottenham before joining Monaco in Ligue 1.
Mitchell was actually the third candidate Newcastle approached this summer; he was not, however, their first pick.
Having said that, TBR Football is aware that Hugo Viana, who is now being watched by Man City, rejected the chance to return to Newcastle this summer.
Hugo Viana, who was called a “flop” after making 64 appearances for the team after his 2002 arrival, is being pursued by Man City to become their new sporting director after Newcastle passed on him. Viana was seen to be a strong candidate to succeed Ashworth this summer.
Despite being “flattered” by the prospect of transferring to Newcastle, Viana, 41, chose to stay at Sporting CP and stick with highly acclaimed head coach Ruben Amorim, who was also receiving interest from outside.
